I don't profess to know much about or understand American politics. Nonetheless, I tuned into the State of the Union Address last night. I misread the tv guide so I only caught the last thirty minutes of an hour and twenty minutes speech.
The talking points were much as I expected, tax reform, immigration, the wall, the economy. I was more interested and fascinated by the reactions of the audience and Trump's own body language.
He continually paused and looked to his left. He clapped for himself and his facial expressions? Statesmanlike? Over-wrought and bizarre. Behind him Mike Pence and Paul Ryan were like puppets, popped up on their controlling strings at short intervals. They provided the stimulus for the many standing ovations- for the most part by the Republicans. There were heart-rending stories of a soldier, a police officer, a North Korean defector, the parents of a young man who died from his detention in North Korea. Recognizing these people? Fine. But I didn't understand how that had anything to do with the State of the Union.
Most chilling, were the chants of "USA, USA, USA." Again patriotism is good but it was a little "rock star-like" for a political event. It reminded me too much of Hitler and his indoctrinated crowds. Synchronized shouts, "Seig Heil!" and the straight-armed Nazi salute. Trump has fooled/manipulated the Republicans and it's frightening.
I've been writing on and off for years and this is where my more serious pieces will be.
