I walked the trails in my small town today. I'm very lucky because they loop through a natural treed reserve and past residential areas. They are maintained very well and a joy to me and my little dog.
What isn't a joy is the vandalism I noticed today. Communities in Bloom has had several lovely, white gazebos erected around town. One of the most recent is near a playground along the walking trail. Someone has, likely this weekend, kicked out several of the spindles that are part of the "fence" that marks the edges of the gazebo. To what purpose? The gazebo can be the site of a photo shoot; I've seen children playing inside and on a warm day, one could sit under its roof and rest while the kids explore the playground. I was disgusted.
As disgusted as the time earlier I saw what had to be human excrement on one of the benches that is provided for walkers to sit on while they enjoy the sun and view. The feces was right on the seat of the bench and it isn't possible that it was deposited by a canine. They will poop wherever, but I've never known one to climb onto a bench to do it. Someone who lowers him or herself to crapping to create a display has no self-respect. Their motive is a mystery.
Less disgusting but as disrespectful is the number of Tim Horton's cups, fast food containers and cigarette packages that have been tossed randomly into the environment. If a person hangs onto the garbage for only a short distance, containers for its disposal are provided at regular intervals. The trails are there for all to enjoy.
I am truly puzzled and angry that so-called humans are so careless of this great place and I am sad to think that this is the kind of travesty enacted on our environment as a whole. We treat the whole earth as our garbage dump to our peril.
Yes, I'm of a certain age but I'm pretty spry and like to think still smart enough.
