By this time, everyone recognizes Mike Duffy as the Senator in trouble over expenses, mainly living expenses. He owed $90.000 and PM Harper's Chief of Staff, Nigel Wright cut him a check for the whole amount. Oh, to have such friends. Once Robert Fife, of CTV, broke the story, Wright resigned. Prime Minister Harper claims he knew nothing of the transaction. It's pretty hard to believe, given the kind of hands-on micro-managing disciplinarian he is. Pamela Wallin, Mac Harb and Patrick Brazeau have similarly broken the trust vested in them. They are all supposed to be members of our Senate, a second parliamentary house where they can think, work and take a last, careful look at new legislation. Instead they have been taking advantage, flying here and there (Pamela Wallin), claiming cottages as primary residences and running up all kinds of expenses.
I used to think the Senate was a place for sober thought, where a senator could work for the country with fewer of the political ties and loyalties. I thought that their loyalties might be to the greater good of Canada. Silly me.
Perhaps we should just get rid of the Senate for it seems that a few take such blatant disadvantage that they undermine the good, hard working people who are actually serving us.
Then we come to Rob Ford. He can't be an idiot and still be the mayor of Canada's largest city, can he? Yet he comes up with bigger and bigger gaffes. Before the crack smoking video incident, you could chalk it up to an abrasive, overly confident personality. Not every politician gets along well with maggots... oh, sorry...about that I shouldn't have said it. I mean, media. He could be a self-made man of the common people and yet, the crack smoking problem doesn't fit that image, either. Why didn't he come right out, immediately and deny using crack? If he has smoked it, why not throw himself on the mercy of his electorate and ask forgiveness. Why not say he didn't inhale? (Thanks, Bill Clinton.)
Why use his brother Doug as a spokesman? Doug doesn't do drugs or condone drug use. He smoked a little dope back in the day.
I don't understand. It all seems a bit cracked to me.
Yes, I'm of a certain age but I'm pretty spry and like to think still smart enough.
